MAC’s LIHEAP benefits range from $174 to $750, paid directly to your energy provider, and the program covers electricity, natural gas, propane, and wood.

MAC’s “Utility Payment Assistance” program pays toward your primary heating/cooling energy source. It also includes a Summer Cooling Program that provides fans and air conditioners to households with elderly, disabled, or medically vulnerable members. Project Help is separate from LIHEAP – it’s specifically for NES electric-account crises (past-due balances, disconnection notices) rather than general energy costs.

What It Covers and How Application Cycles Work

NeedLink’s NES assistance is for electricity that has been disconnected or is at risk of disconnection. Online applications open Monday and Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at needlink.org and close once that day’s maximum is reached – spots fill within hours, so being online right at 10 a.m. matters. NeedLink separately offers income-based rent, water, and natural-gas assistance in person for households whose rent is set at 30% of income (for example, MDHA or Section 8 recipients).

LIHEAP does not cover water bills. For water/sewer help, MAC’s separate Housing Assistance program (funded through the Community Services Block Grant) pays rent/mortgage, water and sewer bills, and prescriptions for households at or below roughly $19,563/year (1 person), $26,438/year (2 people), or $40,188/year (4 people) – call MAC at 615-862-8860. Nashville’s natural gas utility changed hands in 2026: Spire Inc. completed its acquisition of the Tennessee Piedmont Natural Gas business from Duke Energy effective March 31, 2026, and the operation now does business as Spire Tennessee, serving more than 200,000 customers across the metro area.
