System Updates and Monitoring

Proactive Preparations
To stay ahead of the storm and minimize potential service disruptions, CenterPoint Energy launched a series of proactive measures focused on infrastructure readiness and personnel preparedness. These steps helped fortify our grid and reduce the potential impact of ice and snow accumulation.
Here’s a look at what we implemented ahead of Winter Storm Enzo:
Critical Equipment Inspection and Testing: All essential systems, including transformers and substations, were thoroughly tested for cold-weather reliability. This ensured optimal performance even under extreme conditions.
System Hardening Against Ice: Equipment known to be vulnerable to freezing was reinforced. This included applying protective coatings and using insulated materials to prevent ice buildup that can cause malfunctions.
Freeze Protection Maintenance: Heaters, insulation wraps, and other freeze protection devices were tested and maintained across critical components. These prevent condensation and freezing inside pipes and electrical units.
Emergency Response Training: Crews and contractors underwent intensive emergency preparedness drills. These simulations trained personnel to respond efficiently to outages, gas leaks, and other storm-related emergencies under pressure.
Our team continues to monitor the system in real-time using advanced grid analytics and remote sensors, ensuring timely responses to emerging issues. This ongoing vigilance is crucial to delivering safe and reliable energy, especially in severe winter conditions.
Safety Remains Our Top Priority
During winter storms, safety becomes paramount—not just for our crews, but for every household and business we serve. To help you navigate this storm safely, we’ve compiled the following essential safety guidelines:
Space Heater Safety: Always maintain a clearance of at least three feet between space heaters and any flammable materials such as curtains, blankets, or furniture. Never use ovens, stovetops, or grills indoors for heating, as they can cause carbon monoxide buildup or fire hazards.
Natural Gas Awareness: Natural gas is odorized with a sulfur-like scent (similar to rotten eggs) to aid in detection. If you notice this smell:
- Exit the area immediately.
- Avoid using electronic devices or open flames.
- Call CenterPoint at 800-227-1376 and 911 once you are safely outside.
Gas Meter Maintenance: Snow and ice accumulation around gas meters can lead to malfunctions or leaks. Use a broom—not a shovel—to gently clear snow. Avoid knocking or chipping ice, which can damage sensitive components. Allow ice to melt naturally if buildup is too thick to remove safely.
Travel Advisory: Icy roads and reduced visibility make travel extremely dangerous during winter storms. Follow guidance from local City and County officials and avoid driving unless necessary. If travel is unavoidable, ensure your vehicle is winter-ready with proper tires, emergency kits, and a full gas tank.
These precautions, while simple, can prevent accidents, ensure service continuity, and even save lives during extreme weather conditions.
Next Steps: How to Stay Prepared and Informed
To ensure you’re ready for the continued effects of Winter Storm Enzo and future winter events:
Bookmark the Storm Center: Access real-time updates and outage notifications directly from CenterPoint’s Storm Center.
Prepare an Emergency Kit: Include essentials like flashlights, batteries, non-perishable food, water, medications, and extra blankets.
Sign Up for Alerts: Subscribe to emergency text or email alerts from your local municipality and utility providers.
Check on Vulnerable Neighbors: Make sure elderly or mobility-challenged individuals have heat and supplies.
Review Generator Safety: Never run a generator indoors or near windows, and always follow manufacturer instructions.
